Scotia Leaders Program

On October 22nd, ScotiaMcLeod, in conjunction with Ranga Chand and Chand Carmichael & Company will be launching a new product called the Scotia Leaders Program. Ranga Chand, author of the annual mutual fund guide "Ranga Chand's World of Mutual Funds" has developed a fee based, managed account that invests in a basket of mutual funds. There will be two pre-selected, professionally monitored mutual fund portfolios - a Canadian Equity Portfolio and a Global Equity Portfolio each consisting of five funds.

The funds are selected and monitored using a numerical model of weighted average 1, 3, and 5 year historical performance developed and maintained by Ranga Chand. The funds are monitored and run through the program monthly. If a fund underperforms its peer group for 6 consecutive months it is put on a "watchlist". If it underperforms for 12 consecutive months it is removed from the portfolio and the next fund in line is added to the portfolio. The initial portfolios consist of the following funds:

Canadian Equity Portfolio:

  • AGF Growth Equity Fund
  • Trimark Canadian Fund
  • BPI Canadian Small Co's Fund
  • Elliott & Page Equity Fund
  • Industrial Future Fund

Global Equity Portfolio:

  • C.I. Pacific Fund
  • Fidelity International Portfolio Fund
  • Templeton International Stock Fund
  • Trimark Fund
  • AIC Value Fund

Initial investments into the leaders program will be $15,000 until March 1, 1997, but thereafter will be $25,000. Subsequent purchase minimums will be $5,000 per transaction. Funds are bought without a front end or deferred sales charge (DSC), however clients are charged an additional annual administration fee of 1% for holdings up to $50,000; 0.75% for holdings between $50-$100,000; and 0.5% per annum for holdings over $100,000.

The Mutual Fund Reporter

At the Mutual Fund Reporter, we think the Scotia Leaders Program may be a worth while investment vehicle for first time investors with substantial holdings who are looking for a basket of mutual funds. However, since the launch of the Mutual Fund Reporter in 1987, John Zufelt and his team have been performing a similar quantitative analysis on mutual funds. As well, in developing our recommended list for clients, we undertake detailed qualitative analysis such as frequent meetings with mutual fund managers. We also perform performance monitoring to ensure that the recommended funds meet both our investment philosophy and our clients' investment objectives. Interestingly, our recommended list and the Leaders Program share many funds in common.

At the Mutual Fund Reporter, our licensed team of client service representatives along with John Zufelt and Carl Spiess, offer all these services as well as detailed financial planning to our clients at no cost or additional administration fees. To receive a copy of our "Investment Options" brochure which contains our most recent recommended funds list, please call 863-RRSP or 1-800-387-9273 or send us an e-mail.
